The Eating House 1849 Kauai is the latest brainchild of Hawai‘i’s own celebrity chef Roy Yamaguchi. Paying homage to the Hawai‘i of yesteryear, this high-end yet casual restaurant takes the clean, iconic flavors of the islands and blends them with modern techniques to produce cutting edge haute cuisine. The result is a relaxed atmosphere with classic flavors bursting forth from delicious modern dishes, an homage to the plantation towns and the diverse peoples and cultures that molded Hawai‘i in the 19th century.
The History of Eating House 1849 Kauai
As the story goes, one of Hawai‘i’s first restaurateurs, Peter Fernandez, opened The Eating House Kauai in the mid-19th century, utilizing the produce and goods from local fishermen and laborers. The result, out of necessity, was a locally-sourced restaurant with an emphasis on providing delicious island cuisine to the local populace. Roy continues that tradition today, drawing on the natural bounty of these islands and using only the freshest local ingredients.
As the founder of Hawaiian Fusion cuisine, you can always count on Roy’s restaurants having exceptional seafood fare. Eating House 1849 Kauai wows diners with delectable pupus (appetizers) like sizzling sashimi with citrus, soy, and Hawaiian pepper water, a Poke duo (fresh fish marinated in soy sauce), and land-based bites like huli-huli pork belly and sizzling ribeye tataki (seared meat) with an orange yuzu soy sauce.
For entrees, choose from delicious land and sea options like blackened ahi, a kalbi ribeye steak grilled over open flame with a spicy garlic sambal, whole-fried Thai snapper with curry and vegetables, and slow-braised beef short ribs with a honey mustard sauce. Fresh salads heaped full of local produce like the Kale salad with roasted beets and the Kaua‘i fresh farms salad with fresh tomato, mozzarella, and a pancetta vinaigrette are crisp and refreshing, and flavorful noodle dishes like the spicy ramen bowl or Plantation Paella with shrimp and clams are perfect as an entrée or as complements to the mains. Daily specials and decadent desserts are standing by to dazzle your taste buds at your beck and call.
The Eating House Kauai has 3 locations across Hawai‘i. On Kaua‘i, the charming 2nd story location at the Shops at Kukuiula in Koloa offers open-air dining in a plantation-themed room accented with tropical ceiling fans, exotic woods, and an ornate bar featuring all your favorite spirits. Eating House 1849 is open for dinner nightly from 5-9:30pm.
