The beautiful Waimea Canyon and Koke’e State Park are frequently visited spots for their scenic overlooks of sheer cliffs, verdant valleys, and waterfalls. While many people make this 15 mile journey by car, stopping frequently to admire the views, cyclists take on this challenging ascent each year during the Pedal to the Meadow bike race.
The Pedal to the Meadow bike race starts in Kauai’s west coast beach town of Kekaha, which sits at the base of Waimea Canyon, known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. The course begins in the hot, dry climate of the west coast and provides stunning views along the canyon rim as you ascend, leaving the ocean behind. Pedeal to the Meadow‘s course is no easy feat, ascending 3,835 feet over 15.75 miles. As you reach higher elevation, the course winds its way through cool wet upland forest before finishing at Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow in Koke`e State Park. Stick around for post-race festivities, including an awards ceremony, live music, and a picnic lunch provided by Kalaheo Café. Details regarding bike and safety requirements should be reviewed carefully before entering this race.
