Step back in time to the days of the Hawaiian monarchy at Eo e Emalani i Alakai, one of our favorite Kauai free activities. As Queen Emma rides up to the meadow on horseback dressed in traditional time period clothing, you will feel as if you’ve been transported to another era where you can experience the Hawaiian days of old.
A beloved event for locals and visitors alike, Eo e Emalani i Alakai is a window into traditional Hawaiian music, dance, and celebration. Live music spreads across the spacious meadow as the queen and her entourage arrive. Halau (hula groups) from Kauai, Hawaii, and the mainland enrapture the audience with their chants and dance. Browse craft tables with wares from local vendors, deepen your knowledge of Hawaiian culture through educational exhibits, and treat yourself to local snacks throughout the day.
Queen Emma was wife to King Kamehameha IV, who reigned as the fourth monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1855-1863. Eo e Emalani i Alakai is reminiscent of Queen Emma’s journey from her home in Lawai to the mountains of Koke’e in 1871, where she called for her court to offer poems and chants of appreciation for the beautiful landscape and nature throughout the journey.
