Watching cowboys in action is probably not the first thing you think of when you imagine a trip to Hawaii, but paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys and cowgirls) have been top rodeo competitors since the early 1900s. Head to the Plantation Days Rodeo, one of our favorite Kauai Hawaii events, for a day of good old fashioned fun!
There is plenty of entertainment on schedule throughout the Plantation Days Rodeo. Events such as bull riding, wild cow milking, high dollar team roping, barrel racing, and break-away roping will be on display, as well as a local favorite known as po’o wai u & double mugging. Kids will love watching children their own age showcasing their talents in activities such as mutton busting (sheep riding), keiki barrel racing, junior steer riding, and kids stickhorse (dummy) roping. Aside from all of the action found in the dirt rings, guests will also enjoy live country music, dancing, carnival games, a petting zoo, and pony rides. Local food items will also be for sale.
Attend This Event
The Plantation Days Rodeo is part of the larger Koloa Plantation Days celebration held on the island’s sunny south shore on a Friday-Sunday in late July. This Kauai entertainment event is held at CJM Country Stables, located 1.5 miles past the Grand Hyatt at the end of Poipu Road. Entrance to the festival is $10 for adults, with children 18 and under entering free. Free parking is also available.
Around the Area
CJM Country Stables is located by the Mahaulepu Beach, Makauwahi Cave, and the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail. The Heritage Trail follows the coastline from Mahaulepu Beach for approximately two miles southwest, ending at Shipwreck’s Beach. This relatively easy hike traverses sand dunes and affords beautiful views of hidden beaches and rocky shorelines. During winter months, it is a great spot for whale watching from the shore. The Makauwahi Cave is the largest limestone cave in Hawaii and has been an important site for fossil discovery. Attend the Plantation Days Rodeo and explore these sights while you’re in the area!
