Experience ancient Hawaiian culture in a lush jungle destination along the Wailua River, where grass huts are tucked in among palm groves and the river drifts gently by at one of our favorite Kauai calendar of events.
The Kamokila Hawaiian Village holds the Kau Wela Summer Festival each summer, when this recreated traditional Hawaiian village comes to life. Find some shade under a palm and lose yourself in the mesmerizing movements of traditional Hawaiian hula as well as Tahitian dancing. With the blue sky overhead and the river idling by, the beat of Tahitian drums will transport you to a remote time and place. Browse vendors offering Polynesian crafts and engage in traditional Hawaiian games. No island get-together is complete without a hearty feast, and this is no exception, with a variety of Hawaiian comfort foods on offer. Paddle by canoe upriver for a visit to the magnificent Secret Falls, stopping along the way to explore Fern Grotto, where ancient ferns drape across a large lava rock grotto.
Attend This Event
The Kau Wela Summer Festival on the Kauai entertainment calendar is held in late June or early July at the Kamokila Hawaiian Village located in Kauai’s east coast town of Kapa’a at 580 Kuamo`o Rd. Tickets are $10-12 for adults and $5-6 for children ages 3-12.
Around the Area
The Kamokila Hawaiian Village is located across from Opaeka’a Falls, a 151-foot waterfall that is conveniently visible from a viewing area near a parking lot. This 40 foot wide falls is viewed at a distance through the valley. Opaeka’a Falls is located right next to Wailua River State Park, where you will find the even more magnificent Wailua Falls, although it is a ten-mile journey between the two falls since there is no direct route. This 173-foot falls is also conveniently viewed from a viewing area near the parking lot, and a much closer view of this thundering falls makes it well worth a visit.
