Hawaii and surfing often seen synonymous, and for good reason. Surfing originated in the Aloha State, and has grown into a popular activity for many locals and visitors of all ages. If you want to catch some waves while on your Kauai vacation, make sure you are well-informed before choosing your location and read our guide for surfing in Kauai.
Seasonal Surf Trends
While Kauai’s temperature remains fairly consistent year-round, its waves change with the seasons. In general, north shore beaches see large waves in the winter and are relatively flat in the summer, while south shore beaches see large waves in the summer and are relatively flat in the winter. The east and west coasts see waves consistently year-round, with the waves from the north and south wrapping around to the sides of the island. In seasons where the north and south shores are seeing large swells, only experienced surfers should consider venturing to exposed beaches without a protective reef barrier.
Rentals and Lessons for Surfing in Kauai
There are several Kauai surf spots that see fairly consistent waves year-round that are great for beginning and intermediate surfers. There are several surf companies offering rentals and lessons in the north shore’s Hanalei Bay. Beginning surfers can catch the break close to shore, while more experienced surfers can paddle out beyond the reef barrier to catch the larger swell. A popular east coast spot for surfing is Kalapaki Beach. Kauai Beach Boys is located conveniently on the beach, offering rentals and lessons. In Kauai’s south shore town of Poipu, rentals and lessons are available at Kiahuna Beach and Poipu Beach. All of these areas are great for beginning and intermediate surfers. If going out without a surf instructor, be sure to check with lifeguards or rental shop personnel about current water conditions. Rip currents are common in Hawaii, and surfers can easily be pulled out to sea if not cautious.
