Memorial Day in Kauai marks the start of summer break. Families are out enjoying the sunny island weather and oceanside cookouts are plentiful. If you’re planning a trip to Kauai over Memorial Day weekend, there are several beachside and cultural options to add to your itinerary.
Plan a Beach Picnic for Memorial Day in Kauai
Join the locals and plan a day in the sunshine, sea, and sand for one of our favorite Kauai events. Pack a picnic to bring to one of Kauai’s beautiful beaches and spend the day soaking up the scenery.
Explore Koke’e State Park
Koke’e State Park offers lookouts and miles of hiking trails with dramatic viewpoints over the Waimea Canyon and Na Pali Coastline. This is one of the most rugged areas on the island. On Memorial Day Weekend, the Banana Poka RoundUp is held at the park. This forest education fair is centered around the banana poka vine, an invasive species on Kauai. This free, family-friendly event offers activities such as basket weaving with the poka vine, crafts, games, and food booths, as well as environmental organizations onsite to help you deepen your knowledge of this beautiful island. This event is held on May 26, 2019 from 10:00am – 4:00pm.
Attend a Bon Dance
Kauai is a melting pot of cultures, and many of the traditions here are rooted in the Japanese culture. If your trip extends beyond Memorial Day in Kauai, the following weekend kicks off the first Bon Dance of the summer season, held on the beautiful grounds of the Kauai Soto Zen Temple in the town of Hanapepe. While the purpose of these celebrations are to honor and remember ancestors, they can be enjoyed by people of all heritages and backgrounds. Activities such as Japanese folk dancing, taiko drumming, and live singing make this a unique experience. Food and game booths add to this a family-friendly activity. The Bon Dance at Kauai Soto Zen Temple will be held on May 31, 2019 – June 01, 2019 from 7:30pm – 10:00pm.
