Fire fighters are continuing to fight brush fires on the west side of the island. Since Monday (5/15/17), more than 60 acres of brush have been burned by a series of wildfires. Approximately 30 employees from the Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Kauai Fire Department have been working tirelessly to create a control area along the western edge of Waimea Canyon. No homes or structures are currently threatened by the fire, which so far has not spread beyond land that was once part of a sugar cane plantation. So far, the cause of the fires remains unknown, though there is speculation that it may have been started by an errant spark from a pickup truck. VISITORS SHOULD TAKE NOTE THAT TRAVEL TO WAIMEA CANYON IS AFFECTED. Waimea Canyon remains open to the public at this time, but Waimea Canyon Drive has been closed. Please use instead either Kekaha or Kokee Road.
