Wailua River State Park

Take a boat cruise or kayak Hawaii’s only navigable river and admire three breathtaking waterfalls all within the lush Wailua River State Park.

Boat Tours of Wailua State Park

Wailua River is the state’s only navigable river for watercraft larger than canoes. Take a 2-mile open-air boat cruise up the river, learning some of Kauai’s history along the way from knowledgeable guides. Stop to explore the Fern Grotto, where ferns grow upside down from the roof of a cave. The river is also popularly explored by kayak, with stops at the fern grotto, as well as Secret Falls. Secret Falls is a waterfall tucked away upstream and is only accessible by a combination of kayaking upriver followed by a two mile hike. Rent kayaks or join a guided tour with Outfitters Kauai or Kayak Kauai. With this being a popular tour, the falls is no longer a “secret” secluded location, but is still well worth the beautiful excursion.

Wailua Falls

With a high volume of water dropping 173 feet into a pool below, Wailua Falls at Wailua State Park is a jaw-dropping sight to behold. It is easily accessible with a viewing area adjacent to the parking lot, putting you in close proximity to the top of the falls. With the right timing, a rainbow can be seen extending below the viewing platform from the base of this double waterfall.

Opaeka’a Falls

The nearby Opaeka’a Falls is not as dramatic as Wailua Falls since you are viewing it from across the valley. However, this cascade draped 40 feet wide across the cliff face and falling 151 feet into the pool below is still a beautiful viewing spot. With an observing area adjacent to the parking lot, it is easily accessible as a stop-off point on your way to Wailua River or Wailua Falls. Head across the crosswalk for expansive views of Wailua River. With a grassy area, picnic tables, and restrooms, this is also a good picnicking spot.
