Welcome to the island of Kauai’s sunny south shore! The popular vacation destination spot of Poipu Beach is teeming with some of the best Kauai beaches, restaurants, and shopping.
What to Do
The renowned Poipu Beach Park is located in the lush Poipu area. Consistently ranking among the world’s top beaches, Poipu Beach has something to offer the whole family. The eastern end of the beach is ideal for families, due to a rock barrier forming a tranquil swimming area protected from the swell. The two crescents of Poipu Beach come to a point, off of which snorkelers will find an abundance of tropical fish and sea turtles to swim alongside. The far west end of the beach offers excellent swimming and boogie boarding. In addition to Poipu Beach Park, Brennecke’s, Shipwreck’s, and Kiahuna Beach (locally known as Sheraton’s), are all spectacular south shore beaches.
Poipu Shopping Village and Kukui’ula Village Shopping Center are two outdoor malls offering surf shops and other stores with tropical wares that are great for picking up gifts or a little piece of paradise to bring back home. Both are within an easy stroll or short drive from many of the vacation accommodations located in Poipu Beach.

Things to Do Nearby
The area surrounding Poipu Beach, made up of Poipu and Koloa, are well-established communities made up of vacation rentals, residences, shops, restaurants, and outstanding beaches. Nearly everything you would want or need is within easy reach from Poipu Beach. In addition to the shops and restaurants located right in Poipu, the charming historic Koloa town offers additional surf shops, restaurants, coffee shops, and food trucks. Two upscale golf courses flank each side of Poipu Beach, including Poipu Bay Golf Course and Kiahuna Golf Club. CJM Country stables is also located nearby, offering a different experience in exploring Kauai. On horseback, you can explore shaded ironwood trails and ride along some of Kauai’s most picturesque beaches, capturing amazing photos along the way!
East of the popular Poipu Beach lies Shipwreck’s Beach, where you will find a sea cliff along the east end and shallow tidepools along the west end. This cliff is the scene of the dramatic cliff jump starring Harrison Ford in the movie Six Days, Seven Nights. Only the brave and the very strong swimmer should attempt to jump here, because the combination of an approximately 40-foot jump followed by a swim back to shore in large waves and strong currents can be a difficult feat. If in doubt, it’s best to stay on the shore to catch sight of other jumpers and local surfers taking on the waves. Shipwreck’s is a popular beach for experienced surfers, but the strong shore break and mostly rocky shoreline makes for less than ideal swimming conditions.
If you make your way up to the cliff overlooking Shipwreck’s Beach, this is also where you will find the start of the Maha’ulepu Trail. This trail winds its way along the coastline stretching between Shipwreck’s Beach and Maha’ulepu Beach, offering magnificent ocean views along the way. At two miles in each direction, hikers can get in a good workout by traversing the entire four-mile trail, or simply turn around when enough has been seen. This scenic trail follows the contour of the cliffs along the ocean and the outer edge of the Poipu Bay Golf Course, offering views of tidepools and rock formations, with sea turtles, manta rays, and whales occasionally being spotted along the way. At the northern end of the trail near Maha’ulepu Beach, there is also an interesting cave to explore. With relatively easy terrain, the Maha’ulepu Trail is a good location for a trail run or family hike.
