If you’ve watched the movie “Six Days Seven Nights,” you undoubtedly recall the dramatic scene in which Harrison Ford and Anne Heche hurtle themselves off a cliff and freefall to the ocean forty feet below. This part of the movie was filmed at Shipwreck Beach in the town of Poipu, on Kauai’s sunny South Shore. Locals can still be found edging themselves down a jumping spot on this sandstone cliff. However, as with any cliff jumping, it’s important to be knowledgeable about the change in tides, rocks, depth, and sandbars before taking the plunge. Even if you’re not planning to jump, it’s worth the walk to the top of the cliff, where you can observe the beach from a birds’ eye view. Whales can frequently be seen playing offshore during the peak season of January through March.
Shipwreck Beach in Kauai
Shipwreck Beach in Kauai is a stretch of sand about a half mile long. The beach itself is good for surfing, body surfing, and wind surfing. This is a spot for experienced surfers, as the reef can be a hazard for beginners. Due to the strong shore break, swimming and boogie boarding are better options for beaches other than Shipwreck. This beach offers restroom facilities, but no lifeguard.
Mahaulepu Heritage Trail
Shipwreck Beach is also where you’ll find the start of the Maha’ulepu Trail. Following the otherwise inaccessible coastline, this hike is really more of a coastal walk. The two mile out-and-back route (4 miles return trip) follows the rugged shoreline, although turning around at any point is an option. At the end of the trail, you’ll be rewarded with the ancient Makauwahi caves.
Location and Parking
Shipwreck is located in front of the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Turning toward the ocean off of Poipu Road onto Ainakoa Street, there is small parking lot at the end of the road. If the lot is full, more parking is available along Ainakoa Street or on the other side of Poipu Road.
