Home to the wettest spot on earth, it is no wonder that Kauai has such a large quantity of jaw-dropping waterfalls. Although some are more accessible, effort will be required to get to Uluwehi Falls, locally known as Secret Falls in Kauai.
While the name Secret Falls may deceive you into thinking you’ll have a secluded waterfall experience, Secret Falls is no longer a secret. There are multiple kayak outfitters leading tours to these falls, which means it’s unlikely you’ll have them all to yourself. But don’t let that deter you – the falls are worth the effort and the journey is a bonus adventure. Depending on the current and headwinds, the paddle takes approximately 1-2 hours each way. Paddle up the Wailua River until you reach a fork, where you’ll take a right.
Continue paddling until the water is too shallow, and then pull your kayak far onto the shore to be sure it’s out of the current’s reach. Continue along the river until you see a rope extending across the stream, which you will use to stabilize yourself as you cross. On the west bank of the river, you will follow a 2-mile trail until you reach the base of Secret Falls tumbling off the cliff 120 feet above. Relax in the refreshing pool at the bottom, enjoy a picnic lunch, and unwind to the sound of water cascading over the rocks. After you’ve rested and refueled, head back the way you came. Although you’ll be paddling down river, the return trip can be difficult with winds coming off the ocean.
