First, let us dispel any rumors about a gorgeous, secluded, “secret” beach on Kaua‘i. It doesn’t exist. There is no such place.
And even if there was, it certainly would not be found on Kaua‘i’s rugged North Shore, nestled between craggy cliffs with a half mile of pristine sand dotted with waterfalls and tide pools. So give up the notion of finding this Secret Beach. It just doesn’t exist.
(Psst. Hey. Yeah, you. Okay, are the riff-raff gone? If you are still reading, we can let you in on our little secret now…)
Kauapea Beach, AKA Secret Beach Kauai
More commonly known as Secret Beach Kauai, this idyllic spot can only be found by those in the know. Located between Kalihiwai Bay and Kilauea Point, this 3,000-foot expanse of perfection is only accessible by a steep, unmarked trail off an unmarked, unpaved road that turns off from Kalihiwai Road. For those who find it, they will step foot onto a forgotten paradise, a crescent beach ringed with high cliffs, lush forests, and the endless waves of the Pacific Ocean. Famous for its size and scenery, you can often find yourself completely alone on this hidden gem tucked away on Kaua‘i’s North Shore, one of the best beaches in Kauai.
Secrets by the Sea
Entering the sand at the western end of the beach, you will first come to a series of tide pools. Varying in size by season and conditions, this can be an ideal spot for kids to enjoy a dip or fun exploration. The offshore waters can be quite rough, and swimming is rarely a good idea at Secret Beach Kauai due to hazardous currents and high waves. During the summertime, if waves are under 2-feet, experienced swimmers can brave the conditions, but you should always exercise caution and never swim alone.
Back on the beach, continuing east you will come to a waterfall that tumbles down from the hillside above. Depending on conditions, it can be a raging torrent or a gentle trickle, but the pool at its base is a nice place to rinse and cool off. The far eastern stretch of the beach past the waterfall is an unofficial (and popular) clothing-optional beach, so be warned.
Hidden away from the world, Secret Beach is one of the best beaches in Kauai, and is an ideal place to relax in solitude. During the winter it is an excellent spot for whale watching, as humpbacks and dolphins often move in close to shore to rest during the day. The bird sanctuary at Kilauea Point is also visible from the beach.
