For a day of family fun, head to Poipu Beach Park. With a playground, picnic pavilions, lifeguards, restrooms, ample parking, and nearby rentals and surf shops, this beach has all the amenities you will need to set up and stay for a full day of fun in the sun.
Ranked one of the top beaches nationwide, Poipu Beach Park is actually made up of three golden sand crescents strung together: Brennecke’s Beach to the left end, the beach directly in front of Poipu Beach Park, and the crescent at the far-right end in front of Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club.
If you’re looking for waves, head to Brennecke’s. With a consistent shorebreak, this is the perfect spot for boogie boarding and body surfing.
Poipu Beach Park in Kauai
A tombola, a narrow sand spit extending from shore to an island, separates the other two bays of Poipu Beach Park in Kauai. The left side offers the ideal spot for small children and toddlers. With a shallow, reef-protected swimming area, young ones can splash and swim safely in the water. For snorkeling over Poipu’s famous reef, head further down the beach toward the tombola, known as Nukumoi Point. Submerge yourself into the underwater world to observe butterfly fish, parrot fish, and sea turtles in their natural habitat. Hawaiian monk seals can often be found sunning themselves on this beach, as well as honu (sea turtles) in the evening. In low tide, you can walk on the sandy strip to explore the island. At high tide, it’s a short swim across. The crescent beach to the far right is good for swimming and beginning boogie boarders. Only experienced surfers should paddle out to catch the break here, as the reef can be a hazard for beginners.
Just across the street from Poipu Beach Park in Kauai, you will find Nukumoi Surf Shop, where you can rent beach chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, surf boards, snorkel sets, and more. Brennecke’s Beach Broiler is also just across the street, where you can enjoy burgers and seafood plates with an ocean view.
