Our Guide to Lihue

Kauai’s east coast town of Lihue is home to all of the island’s conveniences as both the transportation and shopping hub. The airport as well as the island’s big box stores are all located within the town of Lihue. For travelers looking to save on time and money, Lihue is one of the best places to go in Kauai.

What to Do

Large chain stores such as Costco and Walmart are both located in Lihue. These can be great options for stocking up on groceries and snacks for your vacation. Lest you think they will have items identical to mainland stores, there are specialty items that are unique to Hawaii sold at many of the chain stores. Boogie boards, snorkel gear, and other beach items can all be picked up at a lower cost here than what you’ll find in surf shops around the island.

Lihue has all of the conveniences without sacrificing on your visions of a beach vacation. Kalapaki Beach, known for its great surfing and stand up paddle boarding, is located in Lihue less than two miles from the airport. Rent some gear from the onsite stand or take a surfing lesson and be riding waves by the end of day one!

Immerse yourself in the Hawaiian culture during your vacation on Kauai by attending one of the luau’s that take place around the island. Luau Kalamaku, one of the top places to go in Kauai and conveniently located in Lihue on the grounds of Kilohana, provides an evening of good food and entertainment, all while learning more about the history and culture of Hawaii. Touted as the island’s only theatrical luau, the story of the original Tahitian voyage to the Hawaiian Islands is told through music and song. Start the evening off with Hawaiian games, music, and dancing, working up an appetite for the feast that will introduce you to traditional Hawaiian cuisine. Then feast on dishes such as lomi lomi salmon, mahi mahi, kalua pork cooked in a traditional underground oven, taro rolls and fresh tropical fruit. Sit back and sip a Mai Tai as the hula dancing and traditional fire knife dancing unfolds. Also located at Kilohana in Lihue are a railway from the plantation era, restaurants, and shops.
