Known as the Garden Island and home to the wettest spot on earth, Kauai has numerous waterfalls permeating its tropical green rainforests. With about 97 percent of its land being undeveloped mountains and rainforests, there are many hidden gems on this lush isle. While some waterfalls require miles of trekking and boulder hopping to reach, Opaekaa Falls is easily accessible.
Opaekaa Falls in Kauai is located in the town of Wailua on island’s east coast. With a viewing platform adjacent to the parking lot, it is one of the island’s easiest waterfalls to access. Opaeka’a extends 40 feet across basalt cliffs and drops 151 feet into the Opaeka’a Stream below, before eventually joining the Wailua River and emptying into the Pacific. Tropical birds can be seen soaring through the valley over the stream and near the falls. Though the view is somewhat distant – the platform is across the valley from the falls – it is still a beautiful stopping point for admiring one of Kauai’s many beautiful waterfalls. Head across the street at the crosswalk for expansive views of the Wailua River, Hawaii’s only navigable river by watercraft larger than a canoe. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the nearby grassy area or at one of the picnic tables. Restrooms are also onsite.
Planning Your Excursion to Opaekaa Falls in Kauai
Heading north toward the town of Wailua on Kuhio Highway (Hwy 56), turn left on Kuamoo Road, just after crossing the Wailua River. After approximately two miles, there will be signs for Opaekaa Falls and a parking area on the right.
Around the Area
As the state’s only navigable river, open-air boat cruises run up the Wailua River to visit the Fern Grotto, an interesting cave with ferns growing upside down from the ceiling. Kayak rentals and tours are also available with itineraries to visit the Fern Grotto, as well as Secret Falls, which requires an upstream paddle followed by a two mile hike to reach.
