Take a step back in time and discover the plants brought to the islands by canoe when early Polynesian voyagers first came to Kauai. Wander among towering tree roots featured in famous Hollywood movies such as Jurassic Park and Pirates of the Caribbean. Discover the plants that make Kauai the true tropical paradise it is today.
The National Tropical Botanical Garden is dedicated to discovering, saving, and studying the world’s tropical plants. They are a network of five botanical gardens across the United States, three of which are located on the island of Kauai: McBryde, Allerton, and Limahuli. Each of these gardens has something unique to offer.
McBryde Garden: Best for Hawaiian History
Stroll through the Hawaiian Life Canoe Plant Garden to check out the hokule’a, or star compass, that early Polynesian voyagers used to navigate the seas. Learn about the very first plants brought to Hawaii by canoe. Walk the Spice of Life Trail to be surrounded by vanilla and allspice.
Allerton Garden: Best for an Artful Experience
Allerton provides a unique garden experience, combining exotic plants, sculptures, and water features into themed rooms that have an artists’ touch. You can also stand among the towering Moreton Bay fig roots featured in films at Allerton. Bring along your camera, because this will make an amazing backdrop for your photos!
Limahuli Garden: Best for a Personalized Experience
Would you like to learn more about sustainability? Hawaiian history and culture? Are you looking for more of a hands-on experience? You get to choose the focus of the tour to suit your group’s needs at Limahuli.
The South Shore Visitors Center is the gateway to McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden, which is located at 4425 Lawaʻi Road in Koloa. Limahuli is located on the north shore in Hanalei, at 5-8291 Kuhio Hwy.
