Mahaulepu Beach

Along Kauai’s southeastern shore, you will find the beautiful, windswept Mahaulepu Beach. If you’ve been imagining having a long stretch of golden-white sand to yourself, fringed with palm trees, lava rock cliffs, and the pristine turquoise ocean, Mahaulepu Beach might be the place of your dreams.

Actually a string of three beaches, Mahaulepu consists of Gillin’s Beach, Kawaiola Bay, and Ha’ula Beach. The trade winds here mean swimming conditions can be rough, and there is no lifeguard on duty. However, the real gem here is not the swimming, it’s the serenity and wild coastline. Mahaulepu Beach is connected to Shipwrecks Beach, near the Grand Hyatt, by a two-mile coastal path. This path leads you along windswept coastlines, sand dunes, lava tubes, tide pools, white sand beaches, and ascends cliffs with dramatic views of the coastline. Experienced wind surfers and kite boarders can often be seen just off the coast. You may also get a glimpse of monk seals dozing on the shore and the spouts from whales passing through during winter months. The only stretch of the island’s southern coastline that has not been developed, this is an amazing glimpse into untouched beauty. Tread lightly here, leaving only footprints behind.

Planning Your Excursion to Mahaulepu Beach

To hike the Mahaulepu Trail, park at Shipwrecks Beach. Parking is limited, so get there early to snag a spot. You can then access the trail at the top of the cliff at the east end of the beach. It is a 4-mile out-and-back hike to Mahaulepu. Alternatively, Mahaulepu Beach can be accessed by car by traveling on dirt roads two miles past the end of Poipu Road. Continue on Poipu Road as it turns into a dirt cane field road and make a right at the main cane haul road intersection. There will be a security shack with beach hours posted, and the beach closes at 6pm.
