If you have ever received a postcard from Kauai, there is a good chance that the picture on the front was from Lumahai Beach, one of the island’s most breathtaking spots. If you are a film buff, you will recognize it as the place where cockeyed optimist Nellie Forbush sang “Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair,” in the film “South Pacific.”
Scenery at Lumahai in Kauai
Lush breadfruit trees, hibiscus and palm trees and majestic cliffs provide a background for the greenish-yellow sand and turquoise water of Lumahai in Kauai. The beach begins at the opening of the Lumahai River, which flows into the Pacific Ocean. It is a lovely place to just sit and watch the waves crashing on the rocks and along the shore. You will want to make sure to stop at the scenic outlook on the road above, as it is the only spot to take photographs that will do this beach justice.
Things to Do
Although gorgeous to look at, Lumahai Beach is not recommended for swimming, as the currents can get very rough and even expert surfers have drowned in the waters. If you are feeling like a daredevil, you may want to climb on the lava rocks around the water. The beach itself is very wide and the sands are very deep, making it a challenging, yet scenic place to run or walk if you are looking to get some exercise.
There is limited parking on nearby streets. Unlike other beaches in the area, there are no lifeguards picnic tables or bathrooms at this beach. There is no restaurant right on the beach, but there are plenty of restaurants nearby. Most of these places offer sushi, sundaes and shaved ice. There are of course plenty of places to buy souvenirs nearby, and many of them sell large photos of Lumahai in Kauai, if you are not much of a photographer.
Where to Stay
You may be pulled out to sea if you try to camp on Lumahai, so you will want to find a nice place to stay. Why not rent a vacation home or beach house?
