For fresh-out-of-the-water seafood in a casual atmosphere, head to Kilauea Fish Market on Kauai’s north shore. The unassuming building may not look like much, but the seafood wraps and fresh fish on offer are ono (Hawaiian word for delicious).
The ahi (yellowfin tuna) wrap is a popular choice, wrapped in a sun dried tomato tortilla with brown rice, carrots, cucumber, mung bean sprouts, green onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, and organic greens with a house dressing. The freshness of the seafood and vegetables make this a satisfying meal. Also popular are the fish (mahi mahi) tacos, with homemade salsa, sour cream, cabbage, and a garlic cilantro cream.
The portions here are more than generous, so come hungry or plan to split a meal. With the covered outdoor seating area, you can enjoy the Hawaiian sunshine and conversation over a fresh local meal. Although there is no beer or wine available, you may bring your own with no corkage fee.
This fish market in Kauai can get quite busy during lunch time, so come early to snag a spot or be prepared to wait. They also have fresh catches of the day that you can purchase to grill on your own. Pick up some local fresh fish and take it back to your vacation rental, many of which offer outdoor grills near the ocean. Fresh fish and a cold drink in hand is a must during your trip to the islands.
