Ishihara Market

Ishihara Market is a small, family-owned grocery store with a deli counter in the back serving up bento boxes, sushi, hot lunch specials, and poke.

Poke (pronounced Poh-keh) is a traditional Hawaiian dish and local favorite of diced raw fish served in a variety of styles. Try the popular spicy ahi tuna or the Menehune special, with teriyaki sauce and tobiko (fish roe). Poke can be purchased by weight, or order a poke bowl to enjoy yours over rice. This popular item often sells out by early afternoon with few options left by dinnertime. Hot lunch items include burgers and plate lunches such as Hawaiian plates with lau lau, kalua pig, and lomi salmon.

Ishihara Market, a Kauai market, began in 1936 with fresh meat being sold from the back of the owner’s Model T truck. It has grown over the years and has been in its present location since 1953. This family-owned shop is a mainstay on Kauai’s west side. Enjoy your meal on the benches in front of the market or in the grassy area across the street. For a meal with a view, take it for a picnic at one of the nearby state parks.

Planning Your Excursion to the Kauai Market

Ishihara Market is located in Kauai’s west coast town of Waimea at 9894 Kaumualii Hwy. They are open Sunday 6am–7pm, Monday-Thursday 6am-7:30pm, and Friday-Saturday 6am-8pm.

Around the Area

Located at the base of the Waimea Canyon, known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, this Kauai market is a great place to stop before or after sightseeing the canyon. There are also a plethora of hiking trails in Waimea Canyon State Park and Koke’e State Park, making this a convenient stop for refueling pre- or post-hike. Waimea is the last town to pick up food before heading to the beautiful Polihale State Park, where you will experience miles of pristine, mostly deserted sandy coastline.
