The Hanalei Valley Lookout is one of the most photographed viewpoints on Kauai. Standing at this convenient roadside pullout, you will be able to admire the variety of shades of green making up the Hanalei Valley below. A patchwork quilt of taro fields spreads out before you, the squares of crops and marshes creating a unique photo opportunity. Taro has been cultivated by Native Hawaiians for centuries, and a majority of the poi produced and sold in Hawaii comes from this valley. Poi is a traditional Hawaiian dish with a unique flavor and pale purple coloring, often served with poke (raw fish) and lomi salmon.
The Hanalei Valley Lookout is backed by the Namolokama Mountain, where waterfalls can often be seen cascading in the distance. With the right timing, this will all be crowned with a vibrant rainbow arching across the fields. The songs of native birds will play as background music, as you gaze at the over 900 acres that are a protected wildlife refuge within this valley. Photographers will especially enjoy capturing the taro fields in different lighting, with the square marshes acting as mirrors for the moody clouds or pink sunset above.
Location of the Hanalei Valley Lookout
The Hanalei Valley Lookout is just off Highway 56/560 outside the town of Princeville. You will see a pull out on the mauka (mountain) side of the road just past the Princeville shopping center as you’re heading west.
For a more active, close-up look at the Hanalei Valley Lookout, head down the nearby Okolehao Trail, a 2.5 mile out-and-back trail (5 miles round trip). Driving from Princeville to Hanalei, you will find this trailhead by turning left just after Hanalei’s iconic one-way bridge. Or continue west down Highway 56/560 for a leisurely scenic drive over Kauai’s seven picturesque one-lane bridges to the end of the road in Haena.
