Hanalei Beach

Featured on countless postcards, Hanalei Beach is a must-visit destination on Kauai’s tropical North Shore. Hanalei Bay Beach in Kauai is the area’s largest bay, with two glorious miles of golden sand laced against crescent shaped aqua blue waters. The backdrop is formed by 4,000-foot-high mountains, on which waterfalls can often be seen in the distance.

With gentle waves that require only a short paddle out, Hanalei Beach is a top spot for beginning surfers of all ages. Start out with a lesson or rent your gear at nearby Hanalei Surfing Adventures. More experienced surfers can paddle further out to catch the larger swell. For those confident on the board, the largest waves can be found at Pinetrees, which is near the center of the bay.

To get in a great workout at the Hanalei Beach Resort and enjoy the water from above, head out in a kayak or stand up paddleboard. Paddle among the boats anchored in the bay or head up the Hanalei River. All the rentals you need will be found at Kayak Hanalei or Pedal & Paddle, located in charming Hanalei town.

If spending the day here isn’t quite long enough, come for the weekend and sleep under the stars. Hanalei Beach in Kauai is open for camping from 12:00 p.m. each Friday to 10:00 a.m. each Sunday morning (permit required). Roll out of your tent, watch the sky brighten to gold, and have all the early-morning waves to yourself.

With two miles of golden sand, there’s plenty of room to spread out and let your keiki run free. Bring along some sand toys and build a sand castle or take a walk along the shore. Stroll down the iconic pier, built in 1892, to watch surfers from the shade of the pavilion. Adventurous children at the Hanalei Beach Resort will enjoy joining the local kids jumping from the pier into the clear waters below and climbing back up the rungs along the side.

When to Visit Hanalei Beach

Hanalei Beach has the calmest water during summer months. From mid-October through March, high surf can create strong rip currents and a pounding shore break, and waves of 20 feet and more are not uncommon.
