Haena Beach Park

You and your family have just arrived on Kauai and you cannot decide whether to go to the beach or on a hike through the jungle. Why not visit Haena Beach Park, where you can do both? A walk on Haena offers a view of the sparkling turquoise waters and the looming cliffs of Mount Makana, also known as Bali Hai.

Beach Activities

The beach offers an array of fun activities. In the summer you can see loads of tropical fish and even a giant turtle or two when the waters are calm enough to go snorkeling. In the winter you can watch expert surfers ride the impressively gigantic and turbulent waves of the Pacific Ocean.

People come from all over the world to collect the beautiful seashells that line the shore of Haena Beach. Camping is allowed on the beach so long as you have a permit and there are showers, bathrooms and picnic tables for campers.

Hikes

If you go on the mountain side of Haena Beach Park you will find many hiking trails. The Haena Beach Trail is not to heavily trafficked and will take you through a lush jungle to reach a coast with spectacular views.

The Puna Trail offers an intermediate level hike through a rainforest. You will have to deal with mud and you will want to wear insect repellent. The trail is open, and you will get some spectacular views of the coast. If you are feeling especially brave, you can also walk along the cliffs of the beach.

The Wildlife at Haena Beach

You may happen upon a napping seal or two as you walk along the Haena Beach Park. You will also see many wild roosters and chickens walking about the island. There is a wildlife refuge on the island and you will see a variety of water birds, including the long legged Ae‘o and the ‘Alae ke‘oke‘o, which is a beautifully marked bird with a black body and white beak.

The beach is very popular, and it is one of the few beaches on the island with a large parking lot.
