The Garden Isle of Kauai is known for its lush green spaces, of which Kukuiolono Park & Golf Course is comprised of 180 acres. Located in the south shore hilltop town of Kalaheo, the park offers the promise of a breezy afternoon taking in distant ocean views across rolling terrain making it one of the best Kauai parks.
Located off the traditional tourist path, Kukuiolono Park & Golf Course is popular with locals and has something to offer the whole family. A dirt loop trail beginning at the lower parking lot winds through the ironwood and eucalyptus forest, providing a great shaded area for a walk or jog, with additional paved paths winding throughout the park to extend the route. Explore the Japanese garden, meandering over the quaint footbridge and taking in a variety of fountains, statues, and tropical plants. Following the path leading across the golf course will lead to pavilion on a bluff overlooking vast views of the Pacific. Bring along a picnic lunch to enjoy at one of the covered picnic tables.

Plan Your Excursion to Kukuiolono Park
Kukuiolono Park is located in the south shore town of Kalaheo at 854 Pu’u Rd and offers a variety of golf options. Although it’s not the most posh course on the island, this 9-hole course does offer low green fees, cool breezes, and ocean views. Multiple sets of tees accommodate a variety of skill levels, and there is also a driving range if you’re looking to perfect your swing. A small mini-golf course next to the driving range is perfect for families with children wanting to get in some playtime.
Things to Do Nearby
The town of Kalaheo is situated midway between the popular south shore area of Poipu and the western towns of Hanapepe and Eleele. Hanapepe is a small, charming town that offers a handful of shops featuring locally made goods, as well as a bookstore, restaurants, and coffee shop. This sleepy town comes alive on Friday nights for Art Night, popular with both locals and visitors. Art galleries, shops, and restaurants are all open on Art Night and tables are set up along the street featuring additional vendors, many offering handmade goods. Hanapepe Art Night can be a good option for grabbing dinner, doing a little shopping, and listening to live music. Salt Pond Beach Park is also located in Hanapepe, a beach popular for local families. With an outer reef to protect the shoreline from larger swells, Salt Pond consistently offers up a safe, calm area for swimming. This beach offers restroom facilities, shower, and a lifeguard.
The towns of Hanapepe and Eleele run together, and Eleele is where you will find Port Allen, from which many of Kauai’s boat tour companies operate. The sights of Kauai’s Na Pali jagged sea cliffs are some of the island’s most iconic and stunning, but they are inaccessible by land vehicle. To get to this remote edge of the island, many people opt for a boat tour through companies such as Captain Andy’s or Blue Dolphin Charters, operating out of Eleele. Choose among wet and wild rides on the Zodiac or a romantic sunset sail aboard their luxurious catamaran. Many boat excursions also include activities such as snorkeling, whale watching, and dolphin sightings in addition to exploring the Na Pali coast.
Heading southeast from Kukuiolono Park in Kalaheo will place you in the popular area of Poipu on the island’s south shore. Popular attractions in the Poipu area include the renowned Poipu Beach Park, a popular beach locale for families offering swimming and snorkeling, as well as Allerton Garden, a peaceful National Tropical Botanical Garden. Allerton Garden offers guided and self-guided tours throughout its artfully landscaped grounds featuring vibrant tropical plants and trees. Be sure to check out Spouting Horn while in the area, where nature has formed a hole in the reef along the ocean’s shore. When waves come in, water is forced up through the hole creating a magnificent spray that can often be felt from the viewing area above!
