Families will enjoy a ride on the bright red farm wagon which takes you through the taro fields of the working Kealia Farm. Visit with the pigs, chickens, and other farm animals onsite, and learn more about the agriculture and culture of Kauai. For a more in depth introduction to the island’s agricultural history and how it has shaped local communities, a walking tour with the highly knowledgeable guides is an option. This tour includes a farm to table meal, including items such as taro, lu’au, salad, pumpkin cake, and tropical fruits. For those just wanting to mingle with the farm staff and treat yourself to fresh island produce, come to the farm for the twice weekly Kealia Farm Market, where you will find a large variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, taro snacks, and other treats made from farm products.
Taro (kalo in Hawaiian) is a root vegetable that is considered one of the most ancient cultivated crops. In traditional Hawaiian fare it is used to make poi, made from fermented taro which has been baked and pounded into a paste. Modern day uses for taro on Kauai are wide ranged, with items such as smoothies, chips, and even donuts being made from this root. Head to Kealia Farm to learn more about this interesting crop!
